Progress has been an accident
Laennec rolled a sheet of paper into a tube to listen to a patient’s chest, and the stethoscope followed. Perkin was eighteen, trying to synthesise an antimalarial over Easter, and made the first synthetic dye instead. Brin and Page built a search engine by reading the web as a citation graph, which was an idea out of bibliometrics, and nobody planned any of the three.
We dated both sides of 43 documented transfers. The median gap between one field publishing the answer and the field that needed it publishing a use for it is 13 years.
The wall is vocabulary
A biologist and a radar engineer can be working on the same physics and never find each other, because they describe it in words the other has no reason to read. Every tool built to help them is built on top of those words. Keyword search matches them. Embeddings cluster them. Citation graphs follow people who already read each other.
So the tools return the neighbours. Given the problem as the researcher wrote it, a leading AI search came back with work from outside the researcher's own field in 13 of 50 documented transfers. In 37 of the 50 it returned nothing from outside that field at any depth. More documents do not raise that ceiling.
Index the shape of the problem
We reduce every mechanism to what is physically happening, under what conditions, and how it fails. The field's language comes off. What is left is a description that belongs to no discipline, and two papers with the same underlying structure land in the same place whether one was written about sensors and the other about cells. We have done that to 113,394 papers.
Given a cardiologist's problem statement alone, the engine returns Ott, Grebogi and Yorke on holding a chaotic system on a regular cycle, Physical Review Letters 1990, at rank 7. Garfinkel, Spano, Ditto and Weiss carried it into a rabbit heart in Science in 1992. The engine stops at the paper.
Then it is scheduled
On the same fifty, the engine came back with out-of-field work in 49. A breakthrough produced on demand is a thing you plan, budget and staff.
